How We Can Help…

Empowered Recovery Through Clinical Care

Our Clinical Services sit squarely in a recovery-oriented system of care, as we place high value on developing individual resilience and integrating wraparound, long-term supports.

Our clinical team is guided by a Behavioral Theoretical Orientation, while also integrating elements from other theoretical approaches. In short, our clinical approach is rooted in the concept that humans are capable of change.  We can use goals, structure, and evidence-based treatments to encourage self-efficacy, modify behavior and shift away from maladaptive coping mechanisms. Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing:

One of our team’s favorite treatment modalities is Motivational Interviewing (MI).  This evidence-based tool is particularly effective in treating Substance Use Disorders, anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and maladaptive/high risk behaviors.  A clinician will often use MI to help their client identify a goal, then explore areas of ambivalence. The collaborative, empathetic approach helps us “roll with resistance,” working together to evoke a desire for change, build self-confidence, and adjust our perspective. Here, our clinical team guides the client, working as a team to identify patterns of negative thinking.  For example, we might discuss “all or nothing” thinking patterns that often contribute to poor decision making.

Experiential Therapies

Just as we acknowledge that not all students learn efficiently in the same academic setting, we understand that this applies to therapeutic settings as well.  For folks with ADHD/ADD, traditional forms of talk therapy can be challenging.  Our team integrates experiential therapies to encourage new and creative forms of expression. These therapies may include some form of artistic expression, physical fitness, or team building. This allows our clients to experience emotional challenges in real-time, exploring thought patterns that emerge during an activity and connecting this to healthy comping mechanisms.  For example, a client may focus on encouraging their peers during a challenging team building activity, then process how this behavior improved self-esteem and a sense of belonging.

Twelve Step Facilitation Therapy

Twelve Step Facilitation Therapy

Twelve Step Facilitation Therapy is a widely accepted evidence-based practice that involves breaking down the tenets of the twelve steps and associated fellowships.  This therapeutic practice is different than simply attending a 12-step meeting. Our clinical team explores preconceptions about the twelve steps, highlighting the principles and actions associated with the steps. Clients with any addictive behavior, including Substance Use Disorders or Gambling Disorders, can better understand the mental, physical, emotional and often spiritual components of their maladaptive behavior.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) explores the influence of our thoughts on our behaviors. Our team considers this an “active” form of therapy, encouraging the client to acknowledge and change thought patterns to modify behaviors. The clinical team assists in finding a common thread between thoughts, emotions, actions and patterns of behavior to understand how this relates to mental health, chronic substance use, and recovery. Not only are clients able to better understand behaviors that contribute to substance use or mental illness, but they’re also able to identify actions that create positive experiences without the use of substances. We collaboratively explore areas where positive action creates positive self-esteem.

Psychiatric Care

Many of the clients at Tidal Shift Recovery explore psychiatric medications to stabilize certain mental health conditions. Additionally, certain medications can be helpful in addressing challenges that arise in early recovery.  These may be medications to reduce cravings, improve sleep, manage nightmares or anxiety, and more. Our Psychiatric providers will meet with clients to explore past diagnoses, current symptoms, and potential medications. Although not every client requires psychiatric medications, we find this to be an incredibly important resource.

Family Therapy

Our clinical team believes that family therapy holds the power to both educate family members and dramatically alter a dysfunctional family dynamic.  Family therapy can improve communication, work to resolve conflict, create healthy boundaries, and better understand generational trauma, personalities, and more. It creates a sense of accountability for all parties involved in the recovery process and lays the groundwork for a healthy relationship.
